VALLEY OF HELL
The path starts at an altitude of 965m and stretches out alternating downhill and flat stretches. Due to the nature of the trail is the ideal path to observe the typical geological structure of the volcano-layer enclosure of Somma-Vesuvius. The Valley of Hell separates Mount Somma from the youngest volcano, Vesuvius, and is partly invaded by the lava of the eruptions of '900, colonized by the lichen Stereocaulon vesuvianum. After descending into the Valley from the slope of Herculaneum, you reach first the Arena and the natural Arch and then the Cognoli di Levante on which is placed the most beautiful formation of lava "rope" of Vesuvius dating back to the eruption of 1929, engraved by a deep fracture in which are housed numerous species of fern and inside which you can enter as if we were in the bowels of the Earth! The path can include an extension that contemplates the ascent on the Cognoli di Lavante del Monte Somma: a beautiful panoramic ascent on one of the most scenic tracks in the whole Park! Once at the top it will be possible to descend again to the valley along a path of lapilli and ash that leads back to the main path.
